Wideline onto Slimline tank compatibility?

Forums

Hello,

Probably ansilly question (I've checked the other threads and I haven't found this info), but are Dominator wideline and slimline fuel tanks interchangeable? As far as my understanding goes its just the frame behind the tank that narrows, of course let me know if I've got that wrong.

The reason is that my 99 slimline doesn't have it original tank, the previous owner had fitted a Honda tank which fits really badly. It looks like its fairly straight forward to find a second hand wideline tank, but the slimlines don't come up as often if at all (excusing the really expensive ones). I don't mind if there are few modifications to get it to sit right, anything will be better than what I have.

Another thing I wanted to check, am I correct in thinking my forks should have some form of turn stop or plateto stop the fork fouling the tank on full lock?

Cheers

Hello Chris,

I don't know whether you still require this info' but the answer is as follows.

The S/lineframe tapers inwards from just behind the head steady frontcross member. At thepoint where it reaches the rear of the tank the frameisabout 2" narrower overall than at the front. The tank from my 1951 "88" does fit onto a 1962 S/line frame that I have and it looks perfectly acceptableso ,obviously if you were to do this provision would have to be made to fill the gap betweentank andframe on either side. With regards to going the other way , no you can't fit aS/line tank on a W/line frame as the rear of the tank narrows and will not fit over the frame tubes. I hope this is of some help

All the best, Ian (Hay) Thames Valley NOC.

Hi Ian,

Thanks very much for checking for me, its a bit tricky living in Jersey to find other Nortons that I can take measurements off. I had been considering using a wideline tank on my slimline 99 since your reply, but by chance I've been lucky enough to get hold of a slimline tank tonight, mind you its a bit rough and will need a respray etc. Still its good info to knowfor future reference.

Thanks again

Hello Chris, nice to know your problem appears to be resolved , what type of W/line tank do you have and is it now surplus to requirements ? If so I could be interested in a possible purchase.

Hi Ian,

Unfortunately my old tank is from some form of Honda (it fits terribly), which is what started my search for a feather bed tank. You're welcome to have that one, but I'm guessing you're probably happy to leave that one where it is. I do have another tank, but thats an old Triton fibreglass tank, again probably not what you'd be looking for. Of course if you do want either then let me know.

Cheers

Hello Chris,

Yes, I realised as I pressed the go button for the post that you had already said that the tank was from a Honda, brain fade I suppose. The answer to your other question is yes, you should have a lock stop which would stop the forks hitting the tank. This ismanufactured from a piece of mild steel plate about 1/8" thickwhichfits beneath the headstock, a short piece of tube attached to the centre of theplate locates in the lower centre of the headstock, lockstops formed on the back of thelower yoke engage with segments on this plate. Between the plate and the lower end of the headstock you would normally find a disc of"Ferodo" like material to offer a degree of damping, the "Inter" has a wing nut operated rod connected to this plate to increase the effect. The rest of the plate takes the form of a rear facing triangle which bends down parallel to the front down tubes, this is then located with a nut, bolt and spacer to a hole in the gusset platebetween the top of the framedown tubes.I doubt that this part is still available unless Fred Williams makes them, so you would be looking to pick one up at an autojumble, and I don't suppose you have to many of those on Jersey.

All the best, Ian.

Hello Chris

Unity, Norvil and probably some otherslist(and illustrate)steering damper kits for the featherbed.

Worth a look. Iain

Hi Ian & Iain

Thanks for the info, I'll have a poke around my headstock to see whats hiding underneath. As far as the triangular plate thats meant to be part of the damper goes, mine wasn't bolted to anything at the point when I looked briefly. The only photo's and diagrams I've found so far are specific to the damper, no joy getting a decent look at the business end of stop mechanism as yet.

Fingers crossed

Cheers
