Who makes the Commando rear brake drum?

Forums

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know who makes/machines the castings for the 750 Commando rear drum? I bought one a while ago, have been trying to fit the double row bearing that sits behind the dummy axle. The only problem is that despite warming the casting in the oven the bearing is being pinched badly in the bore(And I mean it's crunchy!!). The bearing I was supplied with was FAG 4203BB.TVH.

The thing that is worrying me particularly is that the company that supplied the drum/bearing said that 'they were all like that'.....and it'd 'bed-in'.....

Yeah I know.

Anyway...In essence I'm trying to find out who makes them, so I can ask the question of what they are being machined to...And also what the correct bearing should be + should this bearing have a C3 designation?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Some time ago I bought a new rear drum for my Commando. I bought it from a reputable dealer here in Australia. I had a lot of trouble fitting it to the wheel. The three drive paddles were not precisely on the same PCD and the drum would not sit down in the wheel hub properly, so when you spun the wheel the sprocket teeth had about 2mm runout. I did quite a bit of fiddling about to make it sit down properly. A rear drum I recently bought for my Norton single was 7-1/16" diam. Already well worn out brand new!!

I'm pretty sure a lot of the stuff on the market, and I don't care how reputable the seller is, but the stuff is comming out of India. It's all right, it looks the part, ....BUT !!!!!!! I don't think you'll find out who the maker is. It'll be some kid in a one room workshop, doing the best he can trying to make a living earning almost nothing while the products he struggles to make are being sold on world markets for 1st world prices.

I looked at some bran new made in China umbrellas tonight. brand new.... as soon as you pulled them out of the plastic packaging, the handles fell off. Not on one, but the lot of them....................
