Wheel bearing suitability

Forums

Hi - I am building new wheels for my 72 Commando Roadster - single Norton Lockheed front disc-right hand side. I have just received new bearings from my supplier here in the USA and the double row bearing for the right hand (disc) side is unlike the original in that the outer race has no recess for the balls. The inner race along with the balls and their cage can be rotated around axially 360 degrees in the outer race. I realize that once the outer race is seated in it's housing in the hub and the axle is in place this rotation cannot take place but I don't know if the outer race should be able take any thrust loads however slight. There is no play in this bearing and the inner race/balls/ cage cannot be displaced from the outer race, only rotated axially as stated above and of course rotated radially- Pardon my ignorance but this is a new one for me & thanks in advance for any advice-Richard Tool

I now know that the bearing i have is a "floating" or "gimbaled" bearing- as I have had no replies as yet I'll try again- Has anyone had experience with this type as a front wheel bearing? Thanks again for any advice-Richard

Hi Richard, I reckon that nobody has ever tried using a gimbaled or spherical bearing in a front wheel and that nobody is going to stick their neck out with a recommendation. The normal double row roller bearing is so readily available here that the question just does not arise. So really, you are on your own with your decision whether or not to use it - we would all be intrigued to know how you get on! Cheers, Gordon.

Gordon- Thanks for the reply- Knowledgeable people in the car field tell me this bearing will be fine but my Commando isn't a car so....

I think I'll try to get the original type to quell my own doubts. I'll keep posting as I progress - Thanks again, Richard
