Upright gearbox- enclosed cover-clutch cable adjustment

Forums

My 1947 500T has the very irritating habit, due to vibration, of the clutch cable adjuster screw screwing its way into the gearbox despite the locking thumbwheel being tightened. Not only does the machine then have drive when the clutch lever is pulled in, but attempts to screw it out again often results in a burnt hand as the machine has a high level pipe.

I was wondering whether Loctite threadlock may be the answer or is there another solution?

Hi Robert,

The easiest way to tighten the adjuster up is to replace the thumb-wheel with an ordinary hexagon nut or grind or file flats on the thumb-wheel so you can tighten it with a spanner. I am surprised the engine vibration causes this, and it would sound alarm bells if it is really bad enough to do this. Perhaps the threaded hole has become stripped or damaged over the years, although the problem you have with clutch lift could also be exacerbated by distorted clutch plates when they get hot.

I guess the real problem is worn threads, the engine is pretty good and the clutch is sound. I am going to put some of the wife's nail varnish on the thread covered by the thumbwheel to see if that does the trick and holds the adjuster in position. I guess the parts are showing wear with age now. Incidentally the engine does have a contemporary head steady which was not standard in the day. Thank you for your comments.

If the  thread in the casing is poor, lock the adjuster  with a nut so you can adjust to the correct  length  then squeeze a nut onto it to lock it tight.
