Hello all , can anybody confirm the torque setting for the gearbox mainshaft nut on a 1972 commando ?
I have just fitted a new one and tried to torque it up to 70 LBS as per my manual . The thread on the nut has stripped . My torque wrench is good quality and I haven't had a problem before .
Any advice appreciated !

thanks for info Christophe…
thanks for info Christopher , just looked at that and the recent Real Classic item , both quote 40-50 lbs .
Wish I had seen them before I did the job . My manual quotes 70lbs for main shaft nut at right hand end !
I think it must refer to the clutch , left hand , end nut .
I think the shaft thread is ok so I will try again with another new nut , RGM must think I have gone mad !

Watch the clutch side too…
Watch the clutch side too as using the workshop torque risks collapsing the shims for the clutch centre.

Check out Old Brits Norton Technical articals. They say 40 Ft/Lb and Loctite in Gearbox assemble.
My Factory MK3 manual says 40/50 FT/LB. Remember Torque settings are dry and not with grease on.
