Thrust washer from crank shaft broken do I need total rebuild?

Forums

My thrust washer from my 850 Commando has broken into pieces, I collected the parts on collection after the latest oil change. Yes they have been verified as the parts that make up the thrust washer. The question I have is do I need to do a complete engine re build. The company that built the engine for me says I do not need a full strip down, and the UK company that I have asked to do the repair says that I do?

I know the engine will need pulling out and the crank cases need to be split, is this not a full re build?

Thanks for any help on this,

Peter

If the engine rebuild is under warranty then the original rebuilder should rebuild, if they refuse then you should get it dismantled by an expert and a detailed report compiled outlining the reason for the failure and cost or rectification of any damage. Then you need to take the original rebuilder to the small claims to get the cost of the inspection and rebuild back to working engine, assuming the report blames the rebuilder (it may blame the part but they supplied it and they then need to claim back from the maker). That's the legal way of doing it and you right as a consumer, but you can try tonegotiate but do it so you do not lose the right to the above by using 'withoutprejudice' in your letters.

If i've read this right the thrust washer you mention is from your cam shaft not your crankshaft, this washer could be changed, but as you say the enginewould need apartial stripping down,ie head, barrels off, timing side stripped , crankcase split, cam bearing etc I don't think you'll need to touch the primary side , I can see where the original company are coming from ( can't they rebuild again at greatly reduced costsor evenfree of charge) as a gesture of goodwill, I can also see the uk company's point as they wouldn't be able to guarantee someone else's work

John and Steve,

Thanks for the replies, The bike was built for me in the USA three years ago and I use it very sparingly. I have completed 1600 miles and I have been told to send the bike back at my expense for the re build to take place. The builder also states that it is three years old so out of any warranty period. This problem sits on top of the pile of other problems I have had, so I thought i would send it to a recognised UK re builder. Looks to me Like a full re build for the cam thrust washer.

Thanks and regards

I've never heard of a disintegrating camshaft thrust washer on an 850. There is not really any action that an engine builder could take which would damage it.

Realistically, no-one can give an unlimited guarantee on work on an old engine

Personally, I'd want to strip and examine all components (including the crankshaft) if an engine has had fragments of hardened steel circulating. You may get away with just big end shells and a set of piston rings but it all wants checking.

Have you collected all the parts and put them together like a jigsaw puzzle?

If you have all the pieces you might be able to avoid a teardown.

Anna,

Yes that was me at Newport, I live away for the bulk of the year hence no riding over of late. I will send the bike to a mechanic down south, but thanks for your kind offer. Should be over next year on re built bike.
