Swing arm pivot felt bungs

Forums

OK Guys,

To bung or not that is the question. I dismantled the swing arm and the felt bungs were in both ends of the pivot but in the manual I dont see any in the drawing. Seems like they should be there to me but..........

All best

What is the bike? I am thinking it is a MkIIA or MkIII 850 Commando. Earlier Commandos had a nipple on the left hand end plug, allowing 120 grade gear oil (NEVER grease) to be added to lubricate the swinging arm pivot. The best way to deal with the MkIIA or MkIII is to put the four felts in place, and after refitting the Welch plugs, drill and tap a hole in the left hand one, allowing the drill to go through the felt. The swinging arm can then be lubricated by adding oil from an oil can, and the hole can be blocked with a screw afterwards. I think this was published in Roadholder circa 1977.

Thanks Colin,

It's a Aug 74 850 and was an Interpol originallythat was sent out to middle east, it is much happier back here in uk though where sand is seldom in the lubrication system! Mine had solid caps on the swing arm, but I have been thinking of changing this to the oil nipple (never grease!) type. So it sounds like I should do the mod you suggest, better than a grease nipple and more simple. I like that.
