Spragging about

Forums

Hi all,

I'm new to a Commando 850 ES...which has had it's ES workings removed. No wonder the starter didn't work! I've now got all the bits to recreate the ES inc a new super-duper starter. two questions though:

Which way is the gear on the mainshaft supposed to lock up ("sprag" I suppose is the real term) - clockwise or anticlockwise? The manual isn't very clear (at least to me!)

Secondly, how do you torque up the backfire assembly to give at 50ft lbs? I'm not sure how you could easily measure that.

Thanks for your help with a newbie.

AndyLook in the Technical Articles of the Old Britts website http://www.oldbritts.com/ob_start.html where you will find info on assembly and testing the antibackfire device. For the latter, you need to weld an old socket onto an old thrust washer (page 12 item 17 of the mk3 parts list) and use a torque wrench - it's all in one of the tech articles.Regards Alan

Hi Andy,

As to which way it should drive, it should drive the same way as the kickstart drives.

That means anti-clockwise.

If when you kick the bike it turns the starter motor you have it the wrong way round !

Hi Tony

Anticlockwise it is then. I'll check with the kickstart.

With thanks,

A big "Thank you" to everyone for their comments. ES now runnning well. I finally elected to get the right torque for the slip system by tightening it up assembled on the bike to the point where it just carries the mainshaft round when engaged, and no more. Clever stuff!
