Speedo gearbox

Forums

Hi all, Canada calling. I have a 1956 Dominator 99 and need to repoalce the speedo gear box. I have checked the Norvil site and they list two types, 1 is a 2 -1 and the opther is 1.25 - 1. The gearbox on the 99 has no identifying markings, and I don't seem to be able to find any reference in any manuals. My guess is iut will be the 2 - 1 as the Norvil site shows this applying to the L D and S models. Can anyone confirm? Also I have two decals I wish to apply but am not sure as to location. 1 is the "Reynolds 531" and the other is the "Made in Engalnd". Once again can't find any ref. anywhere as to placement. Thanks in ad=vance for any help. Tony Cording, Vancouver

You need the 2:1 ratio. The 1.25:1 is for a Commando.

Try Classic transfers in the UK for your transfes.

Unless your 99 Dominator has a Manx Frame, it was not made using Reynolds 531 tubing but with a cheaper material, grade B mild steel, I believe. Internationals used Grade A mild steel. I don't think that there were stickers with grade A or B on them.

The 2:1 ratio speedometer drive gear box's are for the Smiths chronometric instruments, and the 1.125:1 are for the later magnetic ones.

Thanks for the gearbox update, that was the most important question. Oops on the Reynolds 531, but now I know!

The 2:1 speedo gearbox was used by all the Featherbed Framed Models up to 1970. Even those with 18" wheels.

3000 & 5000 series Magnetic Clocks arrived from 1964 onwards. Initially they were fitted on separate pods but later both were mounted on a single plate across the fork tops. Thisroughlycorresponded with the fork yokes changing from 7" wide to 7&3/8".

Well I'm glad that is cleared up!, but now it has me wondering if those dates also apply to other manufacturers as well?

Good Question..........the answer is out there somewhere probably along with an explanation for Anna's contribution to this thread????

Logic suggests that the BIG 3 manufacturers would want to use the change to magnetic clocks asap. Firstly as an advertising gimmick plus they were much cheaper to make.
