Speedo drive

Forums

The speedo drive on my 1972 Roadster has so much play, that it wobles around on the axle with spacer. So much that it drops in and out of engagement with the driving slots. So my question is: Is the speedo drive supposed to sit loose on the axle, free to move back and forth or is it supposed to be clamped down by the spacer?

The Speedo drive should be clamped solid once the wheel spindle bolt is fully tightened, I just wonder if the spacer has been left out on the brake drum side, this is a much narrower spacer than that fitted on the speedo drive side and therefore less obvious if left off.

Thanks, I will check that. I noticed that the center of drive housing, which is supposed to be clamped up tight has beenworn paper thin, maybe because of a past problem or lack of care in assembly. Not a big surprise, as the bike seems to have been, at one point in its life, in the hands of hamfisted owner, without basic knowledge of how to tighten nults and bolts and the use of washers. Either these have been left loose or overtightened. Back to the garage!
