South African registration

Forums

Hopefully thiswill reach South African members who maybe able to help.

My 650ss was exported to South Africa in June 1963, and this is the extent of the information that NOC here has.

It returned here in 2001, in a sorry state, after the previous owner died

From my paperwork it would appear that it had a registration no FYR723W and was registered in Boksburg.

I was wondering if there would be any way of finding further information and history of this machine.

Bad news I am afraid.

The records relating to that bike will have been expunged from the local registering authority records some time ago. In any event our registration system does not have detailed information on ownership from new. The registration number you have will have been allocated to another vehicle in time. As a further complication the registration authority in the Boksburg area has recently changed the number plate registration to a new format with a different numbering system.

When I bought my Mercury I tried to obtain some information on its history as it had not been licenced for some years.I was unable to obtain any info at all as the vehicle registration numbers had been deleted fromthe current registration system.

Thank you Dominic for the response.

I thought I was clutching at straws but it was worth a try to see if I could obtain more information.

Thanks

Hi Peter,

Regretably Dominic is right, Goverment Depts in SA are not what they used to be !! However there is a thriving and very active classic bike scene in SA despite many bikes being rescued to overseas. So you may have some joy if you contact either of the two web address below to see if anyone remembers it.

  1. www.classicmotorcycleclub.co.za

    2. www.vintagemotorcycleclub.co.za
