Hi Michael, sorry you couldn't contact me. I don't remember where I saw them being sold but it was almost certainly at a Stafford Bike show. I don't own a slimline Norton so didn't take special note of it at the time. Sorry if I made it sound like they were easily available! Anna's suggestion sounds good. You can prepare them for chroming if you prefer. I bought my Navigator badgesoff eBay from a chap who had bought them by mistake, thinking they would fit his slimline Dommie!

The problem with used ones I've seenis that any pitting is never restored.Quite easy on brass but not so much on Mazak. Now that I have two sets of Navi badges I intend to experiment with restoring the pitting on the worst pair. It is possible to restore pitting on most metals, including steel, and make them suitable for plating using off the shelf home plating kits, like wot I've bought from Gatero's. I won't make any claims about it yet as I haven't got a Round Tuit to test it with! :) Their website gives a lot of info about plating, stripping and cleaning. I CAN say that their bright nickel plate is as close to chrome-looking as you can get as I have a sample and compared it side-by-side with chrome. Their stuff is cheaper than the more well known and advertised plating equipment.

Good luck, Lionel

Thanks Lionel and Anna.

I have a couple of tank badges. One with pitting on and the other with a hole in. . I do not fancy trying Lumiweld (although Frosts say it would be O.K.)or Durafix to repair the hole as the melting point ( particularly for Lumiweld) is very near that of Mazak and I do not want a molten puddle of Mazak on the bench. (Durafix tell me it is not suitable for Mazak).

I also intend experimenting with the badges to see if I can remove the pitting and fill the hole. I will consider some form of resin, Araldite, or similar.

I got all the info about Gateros plating kits and they look O.K. Best of luck with your experiments.

Thanks to Anna about RGM - Being an impecunious pensioner that might be my last resort.

Hi Mick,

Gateros will tell you how you can repair Mazak - it doesn't involve resin filler, heat or Araldite. Just write to them and ask. Pitting in ferrous metals can be done with heavy copper plating and/or filling with solder. If yours are chromed one of the first jobs is to remove the chrome. Best done electrolytically rather than an acid pickle as it's more easily controllable.

Even my colander (which used to be a chrome-plated primary chaincase outer!) can be restoredfor plating if I wanted to! I probably won't as I've bought a jumble one with very little rusting and it's chrome-plated! Instead I will 'glass'the old oneinside with woven mat, which is the strongest and I was given some for nothing, then use filler and primer-filler for the pittingthen spray it black when finished. Then I can either sell it or use it for Concours showing as 1959 didn't have chromed primary outers as an option.

Cheers, Lionel

PS. I'm a pensioner too! If I had my kit up and running I would try to help you.

Very interesting about the Mazak repair I will contact Gateros.

Best of luck with your efforts.

Gentlemen,

Just be careful with lead and post plating, I had an expensive repair done 'professionally.' lead, copper, nickel and then chrome but during the polishing process 'they' got the workpiece too hot and the lead flowed.......

I would be very interested on details on Mazak repairs if someone can assist?

Bear in mind i am located in Australia.

Hello Michael . i have just signed in as a member to N.O.C and this is my first post . I am in Australia and bought a set of slimline badges from a gentleman in the U.K from ebay . He had them cast by aBugattibuilder in" solid brass " then polished andtriplechromed . i believe he was going to produce more of these as he hadreceivedplenty ofinterest . I can vouch for these badges being exceptional quality .

I will try and find the details for this gentleman and put you in touch with him .
