Slimline fork yokes

Forums

End of a total rebuild in sight...BUT my dismantling notes and bags of parts have let me down on the assembly of upper/lower yokes and steering column. Amongst the bearings, middle (head race adjuster)and upper (fork crown column) nuts and large metal washers I have found a composite washer (seems almost like bakelite, not fibre, not felt, not metal).

The inner dimension is a tight fit on thr steering column (you need to twist it round the screw threads) the outer dimension matches the frame headstock tube. Only possible place it would therefore appear to fit is under the bearing on the lower fork yoke.

Nothing like this washer appears in either the Haynes manual(187) or the Norton parts list illustrations.

Any ideas?

Will add the fact that although the fork legs have in past been removed for repair/replacement the yokes/steering column setup has never been disturbed, so the assumption has to be this was factory fitted....OR have I stupidly bagged this washer with entirely the wrong bits ?. If so any idea where irt should go? (polite answers only !!)

Thanks, JMB

It sounds to me like it could be the friction disc from a steering damper. Gordon.

Ah yes! that seems likely Gordon, thanks.

So it does go under the bearing on lower yoke. Is this something that Norotn would have fitted regardless of whether or not a friction damper was being added? or maybe its a 'tea break' moment and only half a job done.
