Question is it possible to ride a 850 through a city centre without it overheating and meeting a sticky end? just returned [ sans bike ]from a fiasco in france first the rocker oil feed pipe melted off its mounting soon follwed by the head gasket? has any body got any life lessons about all this i"d be glad to hear from you mr dunn mentioned that when converting the black air box back to old style air filter [which i have done] then the carb spray tubes have also to be swopped for 750 items would this lead to commsndo meltdown in its self ?

The engine must have got very hot for the rocker oil feed pipe to melt. How hot was the ambient temperature, I know it has been very hot on mainland Europe this summer? I replaced the black box with a K and N air filter in the early days but I can't remember what I did with the balance pipe. I think I just joined them together with a piece of tubing. I replaced the twin carbs with the Phoenix SU conversion fairly soon after and that made the bike a lot smoother and easy to ride around town. I did a stint (30 years ago) using the Commando when I was working as a motorcycle courier in Manchester and never had any problems with overheating. I think there must be another problem causing the bike to overheat - weak mixture would be where I would start. What colour are your plugs?

Just back from Spain, most of the time in the South of France and Ibiza it was 35 - 40 degC, Barcelona was like an oven, a couple of years ago I was In Romania on the Commando also in 40 deg + temp, apart from "breathing" some oil out of its pores its fine. Use straight 50 oil if your riding in that heat is my reccomendation, never heard of the oil feed pipe melting? If you are stuck in a traffic jam for any length of time, switch off, save the engine cooking itself.
