I have read accounts of fixes, but never with much confidence. The real solution is to buy a metal tank. if the bike is a Commando and the fibre glass tank is wanted for display/concours originality, keep the fibre glass tank for show use without petrol in it, and use a metal one for riding the bike. I know metal tanks are not exactly the same shape as the original fibre glass ones, and that made me persevere with my original S Type tank for a long time, but it eventually melted and was filed in the 'bin. The steel Roadster one looks OK, and only purists would know the difference.

I have three Commandos in regular use and they all have Fastback fibreglass tanks and single carbs.

I prefer the look of the Fastback tanks to the alternatives.

Early last year one bike suffered a sticking throttle and goo on the back of the throttle slide.

The tankmust have hadhad a filler put in by the previous owner and Ethanol had attacked it.

This tank was then cleaned out and lined withEthanolresistant Petseal and has been ok since.

The other tanks seemed fine but were both linedwith Caswells GTS1750 as a precaution and they are ok too.

I have some spare tanks and I intend to put Caswell inif I bring one into use.

The fillers come with the suppliers instructions but a friend who is a car bodywork specialist did the work.

I dont have the patience or skills and it is very important to follow the instructions on temperature.

Many thanks Iain and Colin.

I used Petseal on a Tiger Cub years ago and it was fine, but that was before ethanol, and I'm sceptical about any sort of sealer with fibre glass, however if I was to obtain a fibre glass tank would your mate do the job Iain ?

I would really like another steel Roadster tank, but the second hand prices are mental, and not too sure about the quality of the India made ones, unless anyone knows different.

SamI live near Edinburgh but if you are close my friend may well do the work for you.Obviously he does charge for his time but he does do a good job.Other steel tank options are the Fastback LR tank - I have one as a back up but its not pretty - and of course the Interstate tank.Iain

Thanks Iain, I'll bear it in mind. My bike is fitted with an Interstate tank, but nice to have a Roadster aswell.

By the way I sold a red LR tank a couple of years ago with a weld repair to a guy in Scotland, was it you ?
