Rust in Mk3 tank

Forums

My mk 3 has gradually developed quite a rusty tank inside and conventional fuel filters are not fine enough to stop the oxide getting into the cab and making it very 'spitty' especially at high revs and under acceleration.

How can I deal with this? How does one treat the rust?

Luke

Hello Luke. There's a product in the UK called Jenolite, which is basically phosphoric acid, which is diluted with water and then used as a 'dip' to immerse rusty parts in for a day or so. They are then rinsed-off in cold clean water, and all the rust is removed. I would assume that this would work just as well inside a tank, and it could be accelerated by putting a few old nuts inside and shaking it about.

Your biggest challenge is likely to be the weight of an Interstate tank full of derusting fluid....

There are probably similar products available in Canada or the US.

Regards, Allan.

Hi Luke, I've used a product called U.S Standard Petrol tank sealer. You clean the inside using their Marine clean then use the de-rust called Metal ready, then seal using the sealer. Available from www.frost.co.uk
