Rotor nut

Forums

Evening All,

I have removed my primary chain case cover and want to get to the backfire device? How do I get the bike in gear so i can undo rotor nut or do i have to put it all back together place in gear then take apart again?

Is the rotor nut a normal nut turn anti clockwise to undo and is it torqued when done back up.

Hi

The rotor nut just unscrews but this leaves the rotor on a taperd shaft which can be hard to remove try leavering it off whith a screwdriver.

if the primary chain is removed i think the only way to stop the engine turning over is to put a lenght of rope down the spark plug hole and turn the engine over untill is compresses the ropethis should compress and stop the engine turning over.

once the rotor is removed you can remove the outrigger plate and the backfire device will come out

have you used the bike recently as if it has wet sumped this causes extra drag and makes the backfire device slip

the primary chain does is not needed to be removed to take the backfire device out so you may be better to put the chain back on and out the bike in gear hold the brake on and remove the rotor nut

The primary chain and clutch are all in place, it just the primary cover and gear leave that are off. Try turn gear shaft but will not drop into gear, any tips as once in gear should be able to lock engine with back break and undo nut.

This is how I've done itat the same stage as yours: Put gear lever back on its shaft (fitting outer cover notnecessary), getrear wheel off the ground with blocks under the centre stand , select gear and at the same time rockrear wheelback and forth- should drop into gear.Put rear wheel back on ground.Try your spanner. If rear wheel turnscontinue gear selection until its in top then get somebody fairly hefty to sit on pillion area of seatwhile youadminister spanner.

Another method I've used successfullyto lock primary drive , and which needs to be done very carefully to avoid damage , is wedge a tyre lever with one end in the engine sprocket teeth and the other endbearingon a recess in the bottom of the inner chaincase- Ifeel readers wincing, buthave always managed thiswithout damage to sprocket teeth !

A piece of hardwood between the chain & sprocket will lock it all up & allow you to remove rotor nut & clutch nut.
