Rocker feed leak

Forums

Hi,

Re 650SS. Does anyone have a magical fix for a minor but irritating oil leak from the rocker feed banjo on the timing cover, I have tried new copper washers, alloy washers, dowty washers, the timing cover looks to be in good condition and it seals for a while, but always comes back.....Arrrghhhh!

Could it be that the banjo is cracked at the copper pipe?

I was going to suggest dowty washers but you have tried them. You could try lapping in the the banjo with slightly coarse emery by oscilatting the cloth with you thumb to leave circular concentric score marks. Don't worry about getting it smooth, just leave continuous concentric score marks that act like a series of "walls" to stop the oil flowing past. This should be done on both sides or ends. They must travel the full 360 degress. You will have to back flush the pipe though to remove the emery dust. Oh yes, you do have a washer on both sides?

Haven't got one hands onto test thread length, but check the bolt is not bottoming out before it applies full pressure to the seal.

Just some ideas and guesses.

I,ve just had the same problem on my Commando. The cover had a bash on the outside which caused the relief valve/banjo face to have a slight ripple in it. Took off the timing cover & down to my friendly engineering shop. They milled 12 thou off across the whole surface to get it flat & square. Alan

Thanks guys, yes I have washers both sides, and yes I have checked to ensure faces are true, the only thing I haven't checked is the length of the bolt, good idea, many thanks.
