Roadholder fork modification 1961 SS 500

Forums

I am about to remove the forks on my bike so I can do away with the gaiters that are on there at present..it is my intention to fit the chrome plated exterior coil springs underneath the bottom yoke....my question is..can I leave the existing internal springs inside the forks, or do I need to take these out and make them redundant...my train of thought is telling me that if I leave them in then the front end will be oversprung and be a very bumpy ride....im sure there are people who have already done this mod..so advice required please..Russ

Will be most interested to see what this does to the handling if you now have 2 sets of fork springs... I like proper shrouds or gaiters. They keep all the road crud off the stanchions, which means I don't have to change oil seals anything like so often. I reckon that riding is actually more fun than unnecassary maintenance.
