RGM primary belt

Forums

Is there anyone out there who would be happy to talk to me on the phone re. RGM primary belt tension/alignment.
Thanks   Roger (Mk2A)

There are only two things you need to know:

  • set the crankshaft and gearbox mainshaft parallel - the belt will sort itself out.
  • set the belt tension when everything is hot because, being alloy, the pulleys expand quite a bit. The actual tension should be similar to that for a chain.

But happy to talk to you on the 'phone. PM me if you wish.

I would suggest fitting a double sided gearbox tensioner as I had the gearbox move slightly with a RGM belt which wrecked the sleeve gear bushes.
Since fitting the double sided tensioner about 20 years ago, no more problems.
I now do this on all my Norton's. chain or belt.

Hi Roger, attached is an article that I wrote for our Victorian branch here in Australia. I have lost the drawings unfortunately but the instructions are precise.
As Jon  suggests the addition of the drive side adjuster is most important.
It may take you a number of times to get the alignment spot on. Just when you think it is right and lock everything up the measurements say no.
I don't know if anyone tried my method or not. I penned this over 10 years ago.
Good luck.  I hope I have attached the file, if not I will try again.
