A & R unit

Could someone tell what degree advance and retard unit (this is for a standard mechanical points setup) should be on a 750 commando? would it be 14 degrees? cheers nick

My old A/R unit has 12 degrees stamped on the back of it. They are not very accurate once the spindle starts to wear. Setting mine IAW the Haynes manual resulted in a spark fully advanced by 1500 rpm and at 40 degrees before TDC. Cost me a cracked piston and a pair of cherry red down pipes (not for long though)

The really important thing is to time the ignition fully advanced. I prefer static timing using a cigarette paper and a timing disk. The special washer thing to lock the timing is a must have piece of kit for a Commando owner.

ok 12 degrees it will be,i am going back to points because my boyer unit is playing me up ,it is kicking me back despite being timed correctly and a full 12 volts at the CDI, i also have a spare lucas rita that i may try aswell this could be a better option opinions seem to vary a hell of a lot on this subject cheers nick

If you are going back to points it would be a good idea to check your timing with a strobe light IMHO. The washer Colin talks about to lock the A/R unit fully advanced tends to skew the points cam to one side once there is some wear in the spindle. That's what cost me the cracked piston. once I used a strobe to accurately set the timing, the bike was transformed for the better. 40 degrees BTDC is not an easy timing to live with. Try setting the timing static at 20 degrees and see what that gives you under the strobe. Better to start retarded and work up to the figure you want.
