Possible to convert Interstate to Roadster?

Forums

After a 35 year gap in Commando ownership I'm planning to get an 850 when the right one comes along. I have seen a good Interstate for sale but I prefer the Roadster. I wonder if anyone can please advise on whether it is possible to convert an Interstate into a Roadster? Is it simply a question of replacing tank, seat and sidepanels, or are there other significant differences (e.g. mounting lugs on frame etc) which make the job more complicated?

I've also considered buying one in the USA and bringing it back to the UK, and wondered if anyone who has done this themselves would recommend it, or advise against it.

And if anyone's thinking of selling their 850 Mk 2A Roadster this year I'd be keen to talk.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Its as almost as simple as that, you can even annoy people by having an interstate tank and roadster sidecovers as i do.

There are a few variations on side cover fixings but if you are considering buying a Norton you will be able to solve that.

It's interesting to see what crops up on ebay when it comes to mix and match commandos. A recent advert for an expensive "roadster" featured a roadster side panel on one side and an "S" side panel on the other. The difference is subtle but you might not be buying what you think you are. Another common mistake is the original production racer had Fastback oil tank and side panel. most of them now feature a Roadster oil tank and panels. If you are going to ride it and not just look at it, who cares?

I considered importing a Commando from the States, but when I checked out the cost, I decided I would be better off putting the money into a UK bike. It's not just the shipping and thetransport to and from the ports, it's also the import taxes.............check those out with HMRC; theyadd a tidy sum to the overall expense.
