Hello Anna. Thank you for your reply. The bike is a 1962 model 14 which is a standard 99 slimline Dominator. Golden sand is the colour as written in the log book so I assume that is the correct colour for the bike. If you can throw some light on this I would be most grateful. Many thanks, Jim

Hi Jim (Ken) As Anna says it could have been re-sprayed and the colour changed in the log book. Maybe the owner liked the lovely metalic BSA colour, I do to. See:

Don't feel compelled to stick to an original colour. I think you should spray it as you wish. Motorcycles are for enjoying.

Les

Well said Les, you should see the scowls I get when I tell people my '57 model 77 is Post Office Red instead of Polychromatic Gray! You know us Colonials, always startin' trouble!

Hi Eugene. Yes some bikes can look better just by choosing the right colour, instead of a standard one. I always though a Velocette Venom would look great with a black frame butwith red mudguards and red petrol tank and oil tank. It would certainly make a cheaper renovation job than having to replace all that chrome. One day I came across some pictures showing that Velocette had produced one just like that, and I think it was for you guys in the US. What I was so pleased with is that the red theme that I had imagined really does look superb and suits the bike completely. It of course does have to be the right shade of red and that's the secret, just getting the right shade is often more difficult than choosing the right base colour.

What hasdepressed me over recent times are all the TRITONS that are now built that just do not look right. 99% of them stick with the boring black and polished alloy. I'm afraid this is NOT how hardly any Tritons were produced in the late sixties early seventies.

A Triton was a creation to thrill the eye, a wondrous glorious, beast in dazzling CANDY FLAKEpaint work. The best colours were candy flake purples electric blues and maroons, plus all that chrome and polished alloy and the Norton pin striping. How many do you see like that now?Hardly any if any at all. They did not look sissy like that, it made them look even more powerful and I would choose this style over any boring black one, especially as this is how they were MEANT to look!

BTW, ANNE, you are probably right about the value, but I don't give a damn about that, I own and ride my bikes for the pleasure it gives me and not as an investment apparatus. What you will find in practice is that a bike that has a beautiful (non standard) colour will atrract even more bike enthusiasts, usually voicing praise and approvaland get even more non motorcylists admirationthan a standard bike. Apart from a Triton it must not look garish, it has to work with the shape and improve the looks sometimes by contrast to highlight the real machine and it's engine.I thinkthe money or value aspect isone reason that many classic bike owners are terrified to choose their own colour choice and another beingsimplyout of fear of being mocked or derided by other owners.

PS Sorry for hi jacking your string Jim.

Well said Les! I agree that if you are going to plan on showing a bike fortrophy'sat bike shows for originality, or to put in a museum, definitelystick to colors that you can prove were original. As you mentioned, sometimes the different or unique color will be more popular just because it is different. Ebay has proven this fact over & over again!. I remember a friend of mine had a R60/2 BMW he painted Marakesh red with the standard white pinstripe, he sold it at about a 25% higher price than the "correct" black ones were selling at! Paint is easy to change, rewelding those raked out chopper frames, well thats another story !!!!!!

With Reference to colours. As regards to Polychromatic Grey the equivalent obtainablecolour from a paint dealer is VOLKSWAGON PLATIN (CODE 32686M)

There is also Talbot steel grey metalic 397 which is not a bad match either.

Hope this helps,

Regards, Paul.
