Oil return after a re-build

Forums

Hi Everyone

Its been a number of years since I last had to pull my 750 Commando engine apart, 25 years to be exact. So after the the rebuild, happily it starts after a few kicks.......I'm looking into the oil tank for the reassuring oil return, but nothing......after a minute or so there is plenty of oil coming back through the breather pipe, with quite a bit of pressure behind it as well.

I've stopped and started theengine afew times now and I'm sure it has run for the 3 minutes the manual recommendsbut still no oil return, however, plenty coming back through the breather.........does anyone have any ideas before I either ruin the work done so far or I start pulling the oiling system apart to look for faults.....

Cheers Mick

Did you prime the crank ? Is there a cartridge filter and did you fill it ? How long ago did you fill the oil tank ?

If a 750 with rear breather has filled the sump then it will return via the breather.

Three minutes sounds a long time but if the crank and filter were empty then it will take a while.

If the sump was not full of oil then there is probably a problem with the oil return.

Are the oil pipes the correct way round ? It sounds silly but...

Hi Richard

Thanks for your reply, looks like I should have had more patience and faith in the old Norton. Fired her up this afternoon, waited and everything is now OK, Cheers
