Oil lubrication

Forums

Hello,

I was briefly told that I should regularly block off the hole in the oil tank with my finger to to allow oil to circulate around the top end of my Dominator 99.

Can someone explain this procedure to me?

Thanks

Stuart

Regularly? Why? After a top end or total rebuild it's a good idea to make sure oil is going to the rockers but of course you could just run the engine with a rocker cover offand see the oilappearing. If you want to do it, when the engine is running you stick a finger on the oil return outlet in the oil tank and that forces more of the returning oil up to the rockers.

Not something I have ever felt the need to do on a regular basis in 40+ years of riding and abusing my 99.

Are you supposed to perform this operation whilst riding the bike or do you have to stop every 20 miles or so?

Now now Simon. As you well know most of us don't go as far as twenty miles on our bikes so there is no need to remove the oil tank cap whilst riding.

20 miles ! - That could be 3 trips to the MOT centre or a day out needing a packed lunch.Love the humour, keep it up lads.

Seriously though, I believe the advice is aimed at a Domi engine that has not been started for an extended period of time

According to the Norton Maintenance Manual Model 50 to 650SS (1961-63 manual, page 12 para 6) it says "Periodically, when the engine is ticking over, place a finger over the hole in the return pipe in the oil tank. This will send more oil to the rocker mechanism and serve to flush out the small holes that feed oil to the rocker ball ends"

Incidently, the above procedure is not shown for the Model 50 or ES2.

I would think the use of a modern, high detergent 20/50 and an oil filter, would mean that the small holes would no longer get blocked.

Hello John,

Thanks for the reply, I bought an original manual, looked through and sure enough it says exactly that.
