Oil filter to Pump positioning.

Forums

By way of reply to Phil Hannams comments re oil pumps and filters in last months RH. Phil suggests the filter is before the pump on a wet sump engine, this would mean the pump is having to suck oil through the filter, which, due to the filters resistance, would lead to low or no oil pressure. I understand oil filters are designed to work on the pressureside of the pump so as the oil is forced through the filter.

That wasn't Phil's comment it was my linguistically lazy comment on the picture. What I intended to convey was that the positioning of the pump before filter meant that it was vulnerable to swarf however the pump had to be positioned there to get the necessary pressure to drive the oil through the filter.
