Oil control ring width

Forums

can someone tell me if the oil control rings vary in width on a 750 commando i have tried to fit new +20 oil control rings to my pistons and they are too wide looking down on them.the groove in the piston is 1mm shallower on the new pistons (high compression hepolite's),where can i get a set of +20 narrow rings?? regards nick

You could have the pistons machined to suit. It would take a bit of careful setting up but do-able. The important dimension is the width of the groove and that must not be increased. A small parting off tool with side clearance and a square nose will do it. If you go too deep they'll make good ashtrays. Or try Thorntons in Shrewsbury for rings.

I've had to have that done to a couple of sets of Powermax pistons. I'd always managed to get new rings, then I was supplied with the deeper type oil scraper ring and the only option was to get the groove machined to suit. There's plenty of meat on these pistons to do it.It's an easy job for a good engineer. My first set were done my Les Emery, and to be honest they were cocked up with one groove being deeper and sloppyer than the other. The next set I had done by a local chap who is brilliant, so find someone good.
