for some strange reason my 850 mk 3 has just suddenly started to smoke horrendously !

and all the oil has disappeared from the oil tank and appears to be in the cylinders

the plugs are horrendously oily

any clues will be greatly appreciated

What was the last thing you did mechanically to the bike prior to this problem? If you have run it out of oil (and you say there is no oil in the tank) I would suggest lifting the cylinder head and maybe the barrel to see what is going on in there.

It would seem that all the oil has gone through the oil pump and into the crank cases. Put a large bowl under the engine and take out the drain plug, and you'll get your oil back! The MkIII has a special plunger feature in the timing case which is supposed to stop the wet sumping. Yours is obviously not working, read about it in the manual and see what is wrong.
