Not so straight forks

Forums

I have just rebuilt 71s forks ready to go back into theyokes. Whilst waiting for the âoâ rings for the headlight supports. (I forgotto order) I decided to align the yokes using the old stanchions. Although thestanchions are parallel within a few thou from the front view, I appear to havea 0.1â(2.5mm) run out from the side elevation. I twisted the bottom yoke bothways out of line and reassembled. Tightening the pinch bolts always brings themback to the same place.

Iâm thinking badly machined yokes as I canât see how such asolid casting could be bent. It was born with the yokes in 71, so guess itâsalways had this issue.

I suppose my question is how far out is acceptable?

I should add that the old stanchions are straight and I've also reversed them with no change to the measured side run out. It works out that the front wheel would sit at an angle of 0.75 degrees. In theory of course, I'm not sure what will happen when the front wheel is added. Thinking of trying shims or maybe filing the bottom yoke. EEK!

They should be spot on, and no, don't file the bottom yoke. Take the yokes to a professional to get them measured and straightened.

You cannot line up your forks without the wheel in place if that is what you are doing. Assemble forks and wheel, make sure that you have the wheel bearing dust cover in place.

Thanks for comments. Bits I need for full assembly should arrive today or tomorrow. I will do the full assembly with new bits and wheel before I start to panic. How spot on is spot on though? There must be some sort of machining tolerances on the yokes. I made a spacer to gauge the distance between the stanchions and placed a piece of glass on them to measure the twist.

If you do end up having the yokes checked and straightened (yes they can bend) I would recommend Maidstone Motoliner. Sent mine off with a cheque for £60, came back less than 48hrs later. Check their website, price may be different now - did mine around February.

Good luck.

Thanks for input Martin, Maidstone look like a pretty professional bunch. £65 they charge for postal straightening now. Fortunately and unbelievably, I have just done a full front end rebuild with the new leg assemblies and going by the book tightening procedure; top nuts, steering stem, pinch bolts, hey presto, bob on. No discernible run out in any direction, magic. Don't you just love British engineering?
