NOC Commando Service Notes

Forums

I have recently acquired a re-imported (from USA) 750 Commando. I cannot find my old copy of the service notes, can they be obtained? Also, the engine / frame VIN is 235430, is this oneof those non existant 750's?

I don't think the NOC Service notes were that helpful- some of the information was simply wrong, moost of the other wasn't that original and will be gotten for free from reputable dealers, who will inform you what later part is better than the one originally used on your bike, and what modification is recommended.

The genuine factory workshop manual will help you far more (part# 06-5146), together with the original parts list (#06-5034).

Yours is one of the late 750s, in the same numbers range as my 750 short stroke engine. The sales ledgers for these have disappeared and are neither on microfilm, nor in the originals we have (which are not on the microfilms).

Many thanks, The bike came from the USA soam I to understand that it could either be a roadster or a Hi-rider? and can I confirm which one from the bits, I have no tank, seat or sidepanels to look at. Any other pointers appreciated?

In that case you don't have much to go on. Sissy bar? Small (6" or thereabouts) headlamp? Idiot handlebars? Then you stand a good chance it was a Hi-Rider. These were pretty rare, though, even in the States. Mike Jackson once gave me a (totally wrong) estimate of how many were sold- he was far below the number that can be found in the despatch records- but that low estimate tells me it was an uphill battle for him to sell them when he was the travelling salesman of Norton on the West Coast.

A Hi-Rider was basically a Roadster with a few different parts- the basic motorcycle is the same.

Look at the lengths of the cables and handlebar switch wires. If the bike was a Hi-Rider then the cables will be very long to reach the "Ape hanger" handlebars.

The original NOC Service notes seem to have been superceded by the INOA Tech Digest and that is available on this website at the NOCShop for the princely sum of £12 It is a valuable asset when looking for "good gen." With 60% of Commandos going to the USA (over 36,000 machines I guess) there is a lot of good info coming back from that side of the pond. The access norton website is full of stuff as well. You need to sort out the wheat from the chaff, but that is true about anywhere you seek information.
