No first gear

Forums

Having got her running thought I would see if she can move. Can't get into first gear. Goes into second no problem from neutral but not first. 3rd and 4th appear to be obtainable too but not actually ridden it down the road yet. It's as if first doesn't exist!. Getting back into neutral from second no problem. Before I start taking it apart any pointers? Ta.

If the box has been apart it may not have been indexed properly, Mick Hemmings video makes it clear and simple to fix.

If the  gears can be selected going up to fourth but not coming down then the problem could possibly be a broken return spring. This is the chunky spring that sits under the pawl spring mentioned above by Robert.  Photo below.
Otherwise Dan's suggestion would be my next line of investigation..

Return Spring

The return spring as shown in Phils reply can have a "dead stick" failure crack that it almost invisible untill its out for inspection.

Can I assume I will just need a new gasket and oil to refill if the cover comes off? Do I use a sealer as well as the gasket. Blue hylomar?

Can in suggest you invest in the clubs gearbox overhaul video by Mick hemmings, its explains it all very simply. Personally i dont like gasket cement, unless its wellseal!

The video's, parts books and manuals are worth their weight in gold, I'd wish more owners / garages use them.

If you have this sort of issue on the 'side of the road' or are just a 'skin flint' who wants to save gear box oil, then throwing the bike on its Left hand side against the garage wall keeps all the oil in the gear box!

Have taken the outer cover off today. The bike is in neutral. The quadrant and its roller is at the bottom of the window. Would this explain why I can't select first as its got nowhere to go being at the bottom already? Thoughts? Mick Hemmings DVD will be ordered tonight. Ta

Do I need a special tool to remove the clutch lock ring or can I drift it round? Workshop manual mentions alignment marks on lock ring and cover but I can't see any. Should I just mark them before removal?

... it suggests the timing is out by 1 tooth. If you go through the box to top there is likely to be quite a big gap there. No real way of fixing it other than taking the inner cover off as far as I know.
