New steel petrol tank

Forums

Has anyone experience of the new steel tanks being imported from India?

Was thinking of one for my rebuild but have seen other metalwork from this area and it was well........ different!

Hi Gary. If they compare to theIndian Royal Enfield Bullets that use a steel tank available in standard and large size, I would recommend them heartily. The Indian tanks are solidly made out of decently think steel and have excellent paint finish.

They seems a bargain to me. These are often on ebay, so all you need to do is check out the buyers reports from the seller. I think you will find that nearly all of the feedback reports show the buyers are very happy with them. I guess there will always be one person who has had a duff one, but probably not many.

Wheter the the actual shape is identical to British originals is another thing, and perhaps you could email some of the Ebay buyers via the email contact service, I'm sure many would be quite happy to give you their views directly. They might even allow you to speak to them viaa telephone call.

I think I might check out some new knees as well! just got the old beast out of the living room and she did not need too much to get spluttering but I had more problems with my old creaky bits ha ha.

all best

Hi Gary, yes it seems a good time to start getting the bike ready for the new season.

By the way, I have just re-read my answer that I gave to you above. I CANNOT believe the amount of spelling mistakes that it contains. It really is embarrassing! I always have a quick read through before I post the message but it seems everytime I leave a typing error in, but this time really is the worst!

Should be:

Think Steel....thick steel...

They seems...they seem....

Wheter the the...whether the....

maybe there are more!

HMMM ....plus poor grammar, strange how it all looks ok at first, and then after you revisit your message, you spot all the mistakes.Itreallydoes make me cringe, it would be nice to delete it and start again.

I GOT MY TANK FROM ANDOVER NORTON,I BELEIVE THE TANK CAME FROM INDIA.ANDOVER NORTON FETTLED THE TANK MAKING SURE PETROL CAP AND TAPS FIT.I DECIDED TO BIO RUST THE TANK AND ADD A LINER BEFORE HAVING IT SPRAYED,THE ONLY DIFFERANCE I CAN FIND IS THAT THE PETROL FILLAR CAP FITS BACK TO FRONT,OTHERWISE IT IS A VERY GOOD TANK.

Don't worry Les! we are now in the age of the text, so your post made perfect sense. Anyway the content was the most important thing, thanks for the reply.

The filler opening changed during Commando production allegedly on safety grounds (was it a regulation somewhere ?) Originally they hinged away from the rider meaning that they stayed raised if hit in the event of an accident but later versions are hinged at the rear and should be pushed closed.

It's difficult to be certain when the change occurred. Brochure-wise, the rear hinge is shown from the MkV 750 onwards (1973) but according to the parts book, there was no change of part number for the steel tanks from 1972 to 1973 so it may simply be that fibreglass hinges forwards and steel backwards.

I think now I have enough info to be happy with a new steel tank.
