Need a bit of help...Commando SS

Forums

Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you Commando owners out there happen to own an SS version?

I'm trying very hard to track down a seat for one, they seems to be rare as hens teeth!

If I can find anyone with one I was wondering they'd be willing to give me a bit of help by taking a bunch of photos and measure up the seat pan, so I could make a copy (I do a bit of metal bashing as one of my other hobbies) :)

Here's hoping!

All the best,

Steve

Hi Steve

From the photo's in the 'Models' section, I'd be very surprised if the SS Seat was any different to the 'tuck and roll 'S' version' produced at the same time?

This may mean that there's more available to copy at least!

The SS model is closer to a Roadster of the same period, using the same seat base and foam, but with, I think, a dimpled top cover rather than the lined (to simulate 'tuck 'n roll') cover of the Roadster. Early bases were fibreglass, later ones steel. The earlier S Type has a very different seat, thinner foam and a different steel base.

The blue S Type Replica shown in our 'Models' section has very little in common with an original S.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies! :)

Yep, I was basing my investigations to the Orange and yellow tanked bikes in the models section. What's been throwing me has been the pic over at Andover's website...I can only guess it's from the earlier version;

I've been comparing the roadster seat to the SS, there seems to be a distinct 'kink' in the seat pan of the SS (Just above the seat/ shock attachment) as the pan in the roadster seems fairly flat.

Actually...I've just been having a good look at some of the Commandos out there on the web, that kink seems to appear on a lot of roadsters too...So I'm even more confused now!

I think the kink more often than not comes from proud owners putting the bike on the centre stand lifting it by the seat, not the frame rail. Try it and you got your kink!

I agree with Richard regarding the 'Replica' shown in the Models listing.... However I came across the attached picture of an SS which I think is probably nearer the original? It's not clear if the base is steel orfibreglassthough!

That's more like it!

If I were ultra-picky, I might query the tank and side panel decals but, having mis-laid my anorak, I really couldn't say.

Hi guys,

Thanks again for your thoughts + the pic :) Does anyone know if anyone still makes the 'ribbed' seat covers? I saw last week that an original SS came up for sale last week in the U.S, tho I only found out about it after it'd been and gone <rolls eyes>

I HAD MY ROADSTER RIBBED SEAT MADE BY RK LEIGHTON WITH 1.5 INCH LESS FOAM IN IT BECAUSE OF MY HEIGHT ,IT LOOK JUST LIKE THE SS SEAT

Hi Neil :)

That's brilliant, thanks for letting me know. I'll give them a shout, see what they can do for me ;o)

Cheers,

Steve
