My Mk.lll swinging arm

Forums

Hello everyone,

I'm a new ish member and this is my first post and cry for help :)

I recently acquired a MkIII commando that had been stood in a barn for 18years. It's a 1 owner bike and I even got the original bill of sale chuffed doesn't come close.

Anyway it's getting there on the strip down, the one thing that is stumping me is the swing arm. I have a Haynes manual but the description doesn't fit what I'm looking at. The end cap has no screw to remove.

Any pointers would be appreciated, a link to a picture would be even better?

its the only thing left to remove now before I can get everything off to the powder coaters. Hopefully it's me just being stupid and someone can point me in the right direction.

After getting the sprocket off the end of the crank nothing can be too hard :)

thanks in advance for any help, Jason

Hi Jason,

The MkIII swinging arm is located with a pair of cotter pins. Have a look at this

I would suggest you get the proper MkIII manual from the same site, this should make everything clear.

If you are in a rush I can look at the approriate page and give you some pointers.

Regards

Tony

Thanks Tony,

picture helps, I'll order a MkIII book. In the mean time if there is anything to say how to get the end caps off without trashing them? That would be great. The only thing that comes to mind is a self taping screw in the middle and a slide hamer to pull them out. But obviously that would junk the ones being removed.

Thanks again,

jason

They are welsh plugs, you will likely destroy them when removing but drill a hole in the centre and lever them out, if they are reuseable tap the holes so you can use them to refill the chamber with EP140. New ones are a loose fit, you hammer the middle to get them to grip as per welsh plugs on engine blocks.

Please consider painting rather than powder coating. Just because it's fashionable and cheap doesn't mean its a good idea.

The welsh "penny" washer plugs are really only designed for one time use - so don't be afraid of destroying them during removal process. You'd be lucky to get a good seal from an old one second time round.Last time I had my Mk 3 swinging arm offnew welshwashers were about 50p each - admittedly two decades ago.

Haynes Commando manual was running out of steam by the time the Mk 3 came along and while they updated it to include most Mk 3 design changes , some never made it inlike the swinging arm.

They are still super cheap so no problem having to replace them. I just like to know before I start wrecking stuff taking it off. I know they are cheap and disposable (now I do anyway, thanks) just goes against the grain a bit.

thanks again everyone
