Mk.lll SU carburettor inlet ram pipe

Forums

Hello Everyone

Can anyone tell me the length of the inlet ram pipe that was supplied with the Phoenix Su carb conversion for Commandos? i have managed to aquire one of the said carbs and manifold (Many thanks to Rob Quinlan) but the inlet pipe has been cut down so it is only 3/4" long. I can lengthen it no problem but I would like to know what profile it should have internally. Also the foam air filter with it is knackered. what would be the best airfilter to fit? Many Thanks. Hi Peter,

I have two Commandosâ, both fitted with SUâs. One has a short ram pipe, aprox 1 ?â from the mounting face, the other has a long pipe aprox 2 ?â from the mounting face. Neither has been modified, they are both as supplied, the short one being the newer of the two, so I guess Phoenix decided to change them for some reason, maybe the shorter version was cheaper to produce? I have noticed no difference in the way either behaves or performs & thereâs plenty of room for the longer one, so I donât think it has any noticeable effect. I have long since done away with the foam on a spring air filters, they were really crap! Subjected to the heat & hostile environment under a Commando tank, the foam disintegrates & starts to be ingested by the engine. I have replaced them with conical K&Nâs that are readily available & just require a wash out & re oiling once in a while.

Regards, Tim

Hi Peter, I will send you photo's of my SU ram pipe when I get back from France next Sunday, For what it's worth, over 10 years I never had a problem with the Phoenix supplied foam& spring disintegrating, except when theairbox caught fire :)

Regards

Mike
