Mk.lll Isolastic conversion not fitting

Forums

I am restoring a September of 1971 Commando, i have done the MKIII isolasticconversion, i have done the front mountmachiningwhich seems to fit fine, but the rear does not fit between the frame lugs. Do i need to machine the rear mount? or is theirsomethingwrong. The space between the lugs is 8.68 inchs, and iso mount measures about 8.7 inchs, with the mountsburiedin each other.

I had the same problem with both front and rear mountings on my 1971 Commando.

I was trying to fit vernier conversions to my bike and found both mounting lug spaces were 0.10" less than the new ISO spindle lengths. People with more knowledge of Norton Isolastics suggested that it was due to a previous owner making a bodge job of setting up the clearances. ie. just cranking up the end nuts to close the clearance rather than fitting the correct shims. On closer inspection of the mounting kinking of the front lugs could be seen which appeared to confirm some dodgy servicing had taken place. Initially I thought about grinding some metal off the verniers to make them fit but chose not to go down this route.

I ended up heating the front lugs and bending them back into shape. It did not do thepaint on theframe much good but this did work. On the rear set-up I used a jack to spring the mountings apart.

If you have only 0.02" difference then, in comparison to mine, this is not really a great issue and I would have thought that you could also just spring the lugs apart enough to squeeze the new gear in place.

I've converted a few commando's to mk3 isolastics & have never had to do any modifications to the rear mount, it's always been a straight forward swap, only the front has required modification. Not sure what could cause your problem, unless the non adjusting abutment cap (shown as the right hand one in the mk3partsbook)has not screwed fully home ?May be worth double checking that all the parts you have are correct & assembled in the correct order. What do the suppliers of your conversion kit say ? have they had problems before ? It sounds like you're only out by a small amountso could just be a case of making sure everything has settled in properly.Silly question, but you have made sure there are no shims stuck in the end caps if you're using the originals ?
