MKIII starter solenoid

Forums

Spurred into action after reading Ken Merricks article page 39 RH 279 Jan I decided to further assist my poor laboured starter motor. Already 4 poled some years ago it will start (just) a warm engine, I decided to change the solenoid.

Ken details a Leyland Mini solenoid which I think I`ve found on line with "salesteamsolutions.co.uk" however I have a few questions;

the MKIII schematic seems to have a few more connections than this solenoid ie supply to coils. Is the positive earth a question here?

Thanks for the inspiration Ken

Hi Michael,

The connection to the coils is to supply 12V to the 6V coils when the machine is cranking, this bypasses theballastresistor. If you are on the old points system you will need to keep this as it is.

If you have electronic ignition then you will not be using this wire anyway.

The solenoid does not care aboutpositiveornegativeearth.

If the old solenoid works why change it ? The Mini solenoid is smaller but do you need the space ? I have heard paople say that the Mini solenoid takes less current than the Norton one but as the starter is taking 180A or so I do not think the odd amp will make much difference.

Thanks Tony, yes i have a Boyer and just thought that every extra amp I can send to the starter would help to add up to giving the bike the fastest standing quarter on the starter button like Ken M. says.

See the sequel-----Big Battery.

ride safe
