Mk3 neutral light setup

Forums

Hi,

Has anyone had any experience of setting up the neutral switch on the MK3 gearbox. I had to replace the old one as it stopped functioning. My problem is that the manual does not give any clues as it says it is set at the factory and should not require any adjustment. I can get the light on in all gears or not on at all as the adjustment seems to be too sensitive. I was looking for something that says screw in until switch just makes contact then turn another half turn, or something like that.

Please be aware that Andover Norton had a stock of these switches that worked the wrong way round! I had to return said items to RGM and Mick Hemmings. Test the switch off the bike with a multimeter. There should be open circuit in the rest position - on pressing the plunger in you get continuity to light the console bulb. Your last sentence is correct - don't screw the switch in too far or gear selection becomes difficult.

Hi Alan,

Many thanks for your reply. I'm pleased to say that the switch is of the correct orientation. But what I found is that it is very very sensitive as I spent two hours over the weekend trying to get it working. (It was not a genuine Norton from Andover Norton - I was warned that they could be troublesome). To get it working I screwed it in to get it to switch on in neutral and then screwed it in about a 60 degree extra turn, I found that a 90degree turn had the switch turned on in all gears.

The other problem that I did not elude to earlier was that the switch was too long to get in the space as it fouled the crankcase and I had to bend the tags at 90 degrees to enable it to be screwed into the gearbox. For a switch that cost £29 it was a poor show.

In summary a very poor design for a simple switch.

Hi JohnIt sounds as though the rivet that is attached to the camplate and activates the plunger is badly worn. I have measured the height of this, through the switch hole, on a new rivet in one of my gearboxes and it is 0.18in. On another gearbox which is not new, the height is 0.14in. Both these give plenty of adjustment when setting the switch (genuine Andover Norton part which is listed as 16.50 + VAT).Alan
