Mk.3 final drive chain

Forums

Hi,

Does anyone know what is the widestmodern chain that will fit a bog standard 1976 mk3 850 e/s, assuming sprockets are also changed.

regards,

Paul

If you look under the Technical section, there is a fine description of a conversion to O-ring chain. In that article the lack of space around the chain is described in detail. Space around the gearbox sprocket is so narrow that a switch to O-ring chain makes it necessary to godown one size, from 530 to 520 and machine the sprockets to suit. So the answer to your question is that there is not space to go up in chain size, i.e. a wider chain. Of course all this is based on the assumption that you do not want to change or machine other parts, like the primary chaincase, secondary chainguard etc..

Not sure on Mk3 butabout 23.5mm on earlier Commandos. Used to usea DID HD at that measurement across the split link pins. Going to a wider chain won't solve stretch problems if that is your intention. All the wear takes place on the pins and rollers due to lack of lubrication. If the side plates stretch then that is very poor chain quality. I converted to520 'O' ring a few years ago and have to say that I no longer have to adjust every 500 miles. It's worth it and doesn't bring any clearance issues. Contact Stenor Engineering who did mine. See pics
