MK 3 Brake Conversion?

Forums

Bike finished now and have spent the day riding around in the sunshine across Dartmoor and 'fettling' here and there where needed. One thing I am concerned about is the ineffectivness of the brakes (both bled fine when I put them back on the bike with new seals, pistons and pads). Had a couple of scary moments today until I got used to them. On my journey back I decided I would upgrade them, until I saw the price when I looked on-line with the usual suppliers. What else could I do to improve the stopping in a more stress free distance? I have read posts from this site which were added about 3 years ago. Has anything moved on?

Andover Norton 13mm front brake master cylinder done the trick for me.

Hi Mike

One of the best, and most inexpensive modifications I have on my MK3, Is a 1/2" bore front master cylinder from a Suzuki Burgman 125 Carb model 2000/5 around the £20 on ebay you will need to change your top hose for one with a Banjo fitting

If you can turn your hand to a little metalwork, you can transform your rear brake for under £20 with a 1/2" rear master cylinder from a YZF125 Yamaha .

More expensive options are out there.

EBC sintered brake pads, for that " sorry I did not see you" moment. Smaller master cylinder as said then other options as you can afford.

Katherine thanks once again for your advice. I will take a look at that idea. I take it the brakes have improved significantly?

Oh yes !

September ride out through the tight and twisty foot hills of the Pyrenees , northern Spain and in and out of France, with brakes that worked well, no fade. This year I added EBC Kevlar pads in the front £17.02 from EBC direct.

Sounds good. Did you have to make a bracket for the rear one so it fitted to the original holes on the front footrest or did it fit as standard with no additional engineering?

Sorry I see there is only one hole so that would line up ok with the original drilled hole?

Forget the above 2 comments. After looking at pics of the master cylinder and the original fitting arrangement on the back of the footrest I see it wont fit without a bracket being made. What year Yamaha did you get yours from or does it not matter?

I have an RGM dist and Grimeca caliper on front. Yamaha R1 masterr cylinder. A Honad racing master cylinde on the back with an early twin piston calper on the back. Passed first MOT brackes worked good on brake machine but felt wooden in use with no feed back. Changed to EBC Pads made a big difference to the feel. One finger braking most of the time. They feel progressive just what I wanted. Down side is that they do wear the discs and they are not Original and the Grimeca caliper ( same as an AP) does look big and ugly stuck out the front on My MK3. But when a car pulls out if front on you they work.
