Metal Profile (MP) forks

Forums

My 1960 Dominator is fitted with MP (Metal Profile) forks and I need to change the Oil Seals in the top of the fork legs.

Greeves Motorcycles can supply the bits but although they have a diagram of the forks they do not have written instructions for stripping/rebuilding them.

On the Roadholders you just unscrew the retaining ring then by jerking on the stantion you can use it as a slide hammer to pull the seal out of the fork leg. However, on the MP, the seal is level with the top of the fork leg and I cannot see any sign of a retaining device so wonder if they are "peened" in.

Does anyone have any knowledge/experience of these forks and can give me some instructions.

Cheers.

Mick Pond.

Hi Joe.I sent an Email to Metisse but had no reply. Greeves Motorcycles definitely own MP Forks now but you could be right in saying that Metisse manufacture them for them.If they do then they don't want to give any info out. I'm going to have to try prying the old seals out and hope that reveals a way of seperating the Stantions from the Fork legs.Thanks.Mick.

hi mick,

i had some mp forks over 15years ago. i think they have acrinkled circlip [cant remember exactly] which retains a flat spacer ontop of the cil seal. the stantions are removed by undoing the m8 allen bolt at bottom of slider and the oil seals i replaced were 35 47 7 d705.

Hi Eddie.

Thanks for that. If I can pull the stantion out of the fork leg by removing the bolt you mention then I'm sure I will be able to see how to proceed from there.

Cheers.

hi mick, if the bottom bolts loosen then luckily once removed you can slide the stantion off as the bolt retains the damper assembly. if the allen bolt just turns and turns then you will need to make a long tool to fit into the damper assembly to stop it turning.the forks are typical 80 s jap fork design .i cant remember the mp fork damperfitment so you will have to shine a torch inside the stantion and then bodge something to a long socket and extention if the bolt turns and you are unlucky.for suzuki forks i use a 17mm bolt in a socket with a lock nut jammed/welded proud of it to fit inside the damper.
