mainshaft 2nd gear ,1963 650SS Dominator

Forums

I'm going through the gear box on my Dominator, gear box #N24006. The mainshaft 2nd gear is usable but I would like to replace it with a very good one if anyone has a good spare. It is a 18tooth gear with 3 engagement dogs. If anyone has one let me know a price, Norvil no longer stocks them nor will they be getting any soon. Thanks for any assistance anyone is able to provide.

Hello again Billy - Happy New Year. Have you tried Roger at RGM or Dave Coates ?  The part number of the mainshaft second gear is 040418.  regards, Howard

RGM do not have any but these people say they have one:-

Howard, nice to hear from you! Not sure who Dave Coats is , do you have any contact info please? Norvil and RGM appear to be out of stock.

Tony thanks for your reply as well, went on Draganfly web site and the gear pictured is a 14 tooth 1st gear not an 18 tooth second gear but have sent them a note as perhaps they have just mixed up their pictures. Really appreciate NOC members that make the effort to help, thank you all!!

Peter, thanks for that, will order tomorrow from Andover.

Dan, I was aware of that but was told if I went the Commando route would have to replace both 2nd gears so cost double's. Further I do realize that one should change both lay shaft and main shaft gears in pairs but as I ride the bike gently and the lay shaft gear appears to be very good will go with the Andover unit. Thank you for replying to my post

William, not sure where you are getting your advice from but it is incorrect. The only gear you need to use with the correct mating gear is one marked 'AHB' if they are marked 'A' or 'AH' then these are compatible with each other. 'AHB' is found on the 850 Commando's but can be used on the pre-850 AMC gearbox but you must ensure that the the gear pair being fitted are marked 'AHB'

My transmission is #N24006 from a 1963 Norton 650SS, there are no gears in it marked with "AHB" so a Commando gear would not have matched with the existing gear. Was able to source a 2nd gear for my transmission  from Andover so have resolved the issue. Once again thanks for all your comments.

Hello again Billy - Dave Coates's telephone contact details are as follows; -   "Dave Coates does not have a website as he is like most of us Luddites who grew up pre internet. His phone numbers are 01635 862986 or 07866 670390, unless he has changed recently, and he lives near Thatcham. " This info is courtesy of Richard Cornish from another page on a Forum.
Ashley are you quite certain with what you have written above ? It does seem a little contradictory to me.   Kind regards, Howard
