Laydown gearbox ('54 Dommi)

Forums

I have just received a package, of parts for rebuilding my gearbox. I have a query regarding the bronze spacer/thrust washer. The handbook states that this should have oil grooves on the bearing face. The spacer supplied has plain faces.

Should I file slots in these, if so, how many & how deep? The old spacer was so worn that any traces of oil grooves had long gone, if they ever existed! Thanks for any advice, John.

hello john, my one did not have any groves but the bronze washer should have slots so it meshes with the main-shaft and it slides across with the gear , yours ajd

Thanks Anna, I was a bit hasty with my post. I have now cleaned al the packing grease off the spacer; it has the slots you mention, plus three grooves, cut into the side facing the clutch, also three small holes, so that oil can reach both faces. With luck the gearbox will be re-assembled this weekend. Winter is the best time for biking in Spain, you can wear full riding gear without getting roasted when you stop! Regards, John.
