When I start the engine the kickstarter hits the side of the exhaust pipe, Any ideas?
How much play is there normally between the kickstarter and exhaust pipe when the starter is in the downward position.
Could it be the Kickstarter or Z plate or exhaust pipe is bent ? (Doesn't appear to be though )

The kick start lever on my Model 88 used to hit the silencer. What I did was remove the silencer, and refit it with its mounting bracket inside the pillion rest bracket on the frame instead of outside. That gained nearly 1/4" clearance and eliminated the problem

The MK3 ES kick start was redesigned to avoid this. Using MK3 exhaust pipe to cylinder head set up allows more adjustment of the pipes. Have a look on Andover Nortons site pictures at the different exhaust pipe fixings.

Thanks very much for all the suggestions, I tried bending the pipe but not successful .I then added a few washers to the inside of the Z plate to offset the silencer, tightened everything and its much better (hardly touches now)

John, I had same issue after a Mk2 Commando rebuild - turns out it was the exhaust mounting plates. I had replaced the plates that were on the bike with a stainless set - but these were for the peashooter pipes and not the annular discharge pipes - they are different. The correct plates move the silencer back another couple of inches and it clears the kick start. Steve

Dear John, in my experience they all have potential to.
If this has just occured and these are not new pipes then cure may simply be slacken nut at cylinder head, and at silencer, get friend to apply inward pressure with boot and tighten up while maintaining pressure.
If exhaust is new and seperate pipes above may work.
if exhaust is new but ith balance pipe then only cure I have found is to warm front pipe with gas (in area they normally turn blue) while on bike and bend inwards; however doesn't do your chrome any favours.
good luck
