Kickstart rubber

Forums

Annoying little problem with my '72 Roadster- my kickstart rubber keeps sliding off. Hardly the most complex tech issue. I've done the obvious and tried a new one, but it is such a loose fit I'm wondering whether the kickstart itself is non standard. Don't know much history of my machine sadly, and it's my first Norton. Does this happen to everybody that fits a new kickstart rubber, or am I missing something obvious?

They all do that sir!! Mine does and it's annoying. All depends on the trajectory of the swing I guess, any movement towards the outside will slide it off. A straight up/down boot usually works, all in the technique. I think it's supposed to turn on the shaft as it goes through it's travel, hence the lump on the end intended to stop it rotating off.

You could try putting a layer of electrical tape (the older, cloth type might be best) round the lever before sliding the rubber on.

I finally gave up on mine when it bounced down the quayside at Calais in the pouring rain.

I ended up cutting the end off the shaft and drilling and tapping the end. I now have a large OD washer holding it all in place. It doesn't look too out of place when installed with a button-head Allen screw.
