Hi All,
I am looking into a friends JPN Commando & trying to get as much info as possible.
Model: John Player SpecialFrame: 317772eng. 317772month & year from vin: 9-74it seems the factory records from this era are very poor. Interestingly it still has a decal with the serial number across the top seam of the timing cover.

Unfortunately, whilst I have some records that neither the NOC, not the VMCC have- original despatch ledgers- there are gaps, mainly the very late 750s (#235...; this includes the 750 short stroke engines) and most early 850s including all the Mk2As, and thus the JPNs.
If anybody claims his JPN is verified by "the experts", forget it. Nobody can, unless the history of the bike can be proven from point of purchase till today.

That sticker is fascinating. Were they applied to the John Players because the crankcase stamping was not visible with the fairing in place ?
Have you been in touch with Joe Seifert at Norton Motors / Andover Norton ? It has become apparent that some late Commando ledgers did not make the journey via the Science Museum and were retained by Norton. He may be able to shed more light.
