JCC pistons

Forums

Having fitted + 0.040 pistons to my 850 commando, I had to remove barrels after 500 miles to cure an oil leak. As I had to remove 1 piston because of a strange mark in the bore, I found the Circlips loose & spinning round, they were tight when fitted, not happy, I’ll be contacting NOC Shop Monday & ask them their opinion.

When I searched the web, I found on accessnorton that this not uncommon!  What’s the views on this problem by you learned peeps?!

cheers

Hi Paul, I have suffered from this fault myself which caused severe damage and am subsequently having to rebuild my engine as a consequence. After extensive searches of discussions on the subject (mostly on the Access Norton site) it seems it is nothing other than poor quality circlips that are the problem. As you say it appears to be a pretty common occurrence and the circlips in question are those that are supplied in a red coloured plastic bag with Hepolite or JCC pistons. The strong advice is to purchase circlips separately from either RGM or Andover Norton. Also, I have been informed it is vital the circlips are fitted correctly. They need to be fitted the right way round with the flat side of the clip facing outwards and the tangs facing to the bottom.

Please note Paul I am no expert and this is just my take on what I have read. Regards

Thanks Phil,

I think I can count myself lucky I had to sort the oil leak out!

No doubt the suppliers wouldn't admit their failures & you'd have no chance of claiming because in most cases they'll have been fitted over 12 months ago!
