Greetings all,

I need a bit of information regarding a speedo issue on my Interstate.Speedo was running fine after bike restoration for at least 3 years, butstarted to wander / oscillate and read low. Removed cable (which was genuineNOS Smiths) and cleaned and re lubricated. Checked routing and modified to givea smoother route. Still the same...Did not suspect drive as that was a brandnew non Smiths unit from a reliable supplier. So had speedo reconditioned andstill the same Grrrrr....Now additional analysis has discovered end float oncable (at speedo G/box end), with speedo connected is about 5-6 mm. There is awasher under the brass crimp âstopâ @ speedo end and cable runs freely whenturned by hand, but this end float does seem excessive.

Unfortunately when closely inspecting the rear wheel drive there is ahuge end float on the gear shaft, probably as much as the cable. I have two olddrives here one Smiths one after market and both do not have anything like thisend float, so I think the root cause is a duff gearbox! Anyway itâs comingapart today.

Any other advice or information on corrective maintenance and servicetolerances etc would be gladly received. Also is there any source of Smithsg/box spares out there?

RgdsSteve
