Forums

Has anyone tried the Indian made petrol tanks and or mudguards for the Dommis? I want to order one but am wary about quality.

Thanks,

David

Ok - Well i haven't used them myself, but my mate has a indian built Enfield and the quality isn't too bad on it; but don't touch the chrome stuff as it is very thin on the chroming but as you probably realised there isn't much choice left out there so good luck and if you do go for the indian stuff let us know what the quality's like?

Hello I have had emails for the guy who runs this outfit, he say that all his tanks and mudguards are made for 14 gauge steel , and he has slimline mudguards marked up as wide line mudguards, but they have no drill hole in them, so when it comes to fitting the stays you have mark it up first and then drill 5/16ths holes and you need to make a plate for the inside with the same size holes. Before fitting, I would put some silicon seal on the inside plate and bolt up the hole slot? Do not forget the two rubber washers that go in-between the mudguard and the stay.

Ive looked at a couple of Indian tanks, theyre definitely better value than some dented pinholed wreck.Generally made from heavier sheet than orig tanks.Made by hand,no two are exactly the same.If you can rectify mounts that often dont line up,theyre ok.Obviously for a featherbed,or swing arm BSA,this is not a problem. The chrome is apparently plated directly onto steel, and does powder off if not sealed from the air.Same effect as Indian rims. How many tanks do you get triple plated for 50 quid in England nowdays? The guards are heavy sheet too,and good value in my opinion. Freight about doubles the price,if someone could organize a container load.Buy off a reputable supplier, and youll have no problems.Paypal costs 2% commission, but you get peace of mind.Just as a matter of interest,a wideline rear guard was over $1000 on Aus ebay recently.

I always thought that there were a few platers that chromed directly onto steel. My local outfit never does as they say the chrome comes out too grey looking. Chrome on copper on steel is strictly for indoor use only as chrome is porous and copper corrodes. If you see chrome plate with green stains, that will normally be the reason. Triple plating, or chrome on nickel on copper is the only way to go for outdoor all-weather use. It is false economy to do otherwise.

A thick copper plate layer is no substitute for a layer of nickel because of its corrosion problems. I haven't come across this Indian firm yet - is it a secret?

Cheers, Lionel

Anna. I have been in contact with the chap in India and asked him if the mudguards he describes as wideline are slimline and he said he could not be 100% certain if they would fitand I should check with someone in this country. So if any one orders slim line they will not know what they are getting unless they send him technical drawings of the mudguards. I suppose the same can be said if ordering wideline ones. Can anyone help with drawings/ dimensions for slim line rear mudguard?

Cheers Mick

Hello well you should know the difference The slimline ones have no seams along the valance as the wideline mudguards do ,And from September 1955 the deep valanced Mudguards have a lift up tale peace .Slimline do not have this. nor do the early 1952/54 Dominator 88 rear Mudguard it has a shallow valance . and are now hard to come by ,as its the same one that fits the 500cc International Models

What I was trying to say was if you order mudguards, even if you know exacty what you want, the chap in India does not so to get what you want I suggest you send him the correct details for each particular mudguard.

As a side question does a 1964 650 SS front mudguard have the little triangular indentation that is a feature of a 1958 wideline ?
