Identify inlet and exhaust valves

Forums

How can the Dommi inlets and exhausts be distinguished reliably? I have seen elsewhere that the exhausts are non-magnetic. In my box of bits I have some which are completely non-magnetic valves (stems and heads) and some which are weakly magnetic.

Absolutely right Steve. Exhaust valves are non-magnetic but inlets are. You should be able to use exhaust valves as inlets (assuming they are dimensionally identical) but not vice versa.

On most of the post 1960 heads the inlet valves have fully dished tops whereas the exhausts items have a raised ring (doughnut shape) of metal on the top face. The inlet valves also usually have larger diameterheads.

Agreed. The post 1960 inlet valves had a bigger head diameter than the exhaust valves but the earlier heads had same-sized inlets and exhausts. Funnily enough, BSA A7 valves are identical to early Domi ones except for the collets.
